Faculty & Curriculum
- Are Calvary students allowed to attend Nichols Career Center?
- Yes, students who are on a program to meet normal graduation requirements will be able to attend Nichols Career Center. We are participating in this program already this year.
- Are there any dual enrollment courses offered at Calvary?
- Calvary intends to offer high achieving juniors and seniors an opportunity to take college classes which will count toward both high school and college credit. We have already completed initial arrangements with Lincoln University regarding this program.
- Are your teachers experienced and qualified?
- All teachers are currently Missouri certified with the exception of Pastor Kevin Golden who is an ordained LCMS pastor teaching Old Testament and Relationships/World Religions courses. All teachers are strong Christians who boldly live their faith. Every one of our certified instructors are experienced high school teachers with more than five years of service.
- Can Calvary offer my student appropriate use of current technology?
- We believe that today's students must have access and training in using current technology in preparation for their future careers. The Association has made bold steps in acquiring new Dell computers and installing current professional software including the latest version of Microsoft Office to educate the students in the latest software technologies. Students currently use computers for a daily computer class in addition to supplemental use in classes such as Old Testament, Spanish, English, Government, and Biology. Students also have access to these computers for class work and appropriate recreational uses before and after school.
- How does your curriculum meet the Missouri state standards?
- Our standard curriculum meets the Missouri College Preparatory Curriculum. We are currently offering the following courses: Spanish I, Advanced Spanish, Algebra I & II, Old Testament, Art, Choir, Leadership, Civics, Keyboarding, Computer Applications, Web Design, Desktop Publishing, World History, English I, II, & III, Geometry, Conceptual Physics, World History, Chemistry, Relationships, American History, and World Religions. We are seeking to prepare students for college and careers by giving them an education balanced with fine arts, physical education, and academic preparation.
- Is a guidance counselor available to the students?
- Calvary Lutheran High School recognizes the need for a guidance counselor when students prepare to select their continuing education and career goals. Mr. John Engelbrecht, Executive Director, holds an advanced degree in Guidance and Counseling, and has served in some capacity as a guidance counselor for the past 15 years. Students will be able to schedule individual sessions with Mr. Engelbrecht to discuss their future educational and career needs.
- My child has a learning disability or special needs. Is there a place for him/her at Calvary?
- Calvary Lutheran High School has limited resources to direct toward this area. However, where adjustments can be made to the normal program that are beneficial to the individual learner and do not overtax existing personnel and learning for the mainstream, these modifications will be employed. Our qualified and caring teachers are willing to help families who are willing to work hard and will offer support. Our small class sizes allow us to give special attention to each individual student. We are considering the addition of introductory course selections in both math and language skills for next year to offer students a bridge into our college preparatory curriculum.
- My child is gifted. Is there a place for him/her at Calvary?
- Calvary Lutheran High School will offer a curriculum that is challenging for gifted and talented students. It is our opinion that these students can also benefit from a wide range of after school activities including leadership, academics, fine arts, and sports. With our small school size, students can be involved in a large number of these activities which can provide excellent experience and skills for college and career.
- What opportunities do students have to select elective courses?
- We do intend to provide those electives which enhance College Preparatory Certification goals and are of interest to students and parents. Next year’s electives include Computer Desktop Publishing, Web Design, Spanish I & II, Art, Music, and our Leadership class.
- What religion classes will my student take?
- First year students will take Old Testament, while second and third year students will take Relationships and World Religions. Religion classes will continue to be added each year so that students will take courses such as Media & Current Events. The Bible will serve as the primary text for the classes. The Bible is taught as the Inspired Word of God, free from error and intended to teach us about God's love and plan for us. Students of other Christian denominational backgrounds are warmly welcomed. We are sensitive to the differences in the practices and doctrines of the various Christian denominations.
Extra-Curricular Activities & Sports
- What does Calvary intend to offer for a sports program?
- Calvary has already hired coaches to cover Volleyball and Basketball for the 2006-07 school year. We maintain the possibility of more sports programs if there is sufficient student interest. We intend to expand into all normal sports areas as the school develops.
- What extra-curricular activities does Calvary intend to offer?
- We will add these activities as soon as sufficient student interest is shown. So far the highest interest seems to be in developing of leadership skills which may lead to a group called Student Ambassadors. As soon as there is enough interest, we wish to add all regular high school activities.
Facilities & Growth
- How did Calvary begin?
- Lutheran education at the elementary level has been a strong component of the Lutheran churches in the area since their beginning. Lutheran education at the secondary level began to take shape early in 2003 when a group of concerned members of the various Lutheran churches organized and conducted a professional feasibility study called the "Genesis Project".
- This study suggested that a Lutheran secondary school with an ultimate goal of approximately 400 students was not only appropriate but necessary. As a result of this study and the ensuing effort and planning of a large number of people, Calvary Lutheran High School was organized and began classes August 2005. Calvary Lutheran High School is one of approximately 120 high schools in the United States operated by Lutheran Church Missouri Synod congregations.
- What does Calvary intend to have for a permanent location?
- A permanent property is being sought along the Hwy 179 corridor. We are working in conjunction with Church Development Partners to acquire and develop the property.
- What is the projected enrollment for the 2006-07 school year?
- We anticipate increasing our enrollment from nine students in 2005-06 to 27 or more students for 2006-07.
- Where are your current facilities?
- We are pleased to continue leasing space from Lincoln University for at least one more year with the option for two or more years. We have moved to a more classroom friendly adaptable environment for next year, with parking spaces and entrances dedicated solely to Calvary Lutheran High. This building is located at 900 Leslie Blvd at the intersection of Leslie and Chestnut.
Tuition & Financial Aid
- How was the amount of tuition chosen?
- Tuition is established to cover approximately 90% of the per student operating cost of the school. None of the tuition is used to cover the cost of site and building. We are dependent upon congregations, individual donors, and grants to cover all costs not covered by tuition, including financial aid.
- Is there financial aid?
- How is the selection made? Our philosophy includes the concept that no family, sincerely desiring a Christ-centered education for their children, should be denied this opportunity simply because of their financial situation. Accordingly, we have developed a Tuition Grant program whereby families with demonstrated financial need may apply for, and receive, a grant to cover the difference between the tuition and the amount they could reasonably be expected to pay. The extent of need for the individual family is determined by a third party organization that verifies need.
Parent’s Feelings about Calvary
- What do the current parents feel about Calvary?
- "Calvary is an atmosphere for learning in a religious setting with caring teachers who want each student to excel. You will be advised of any problems that arise unlike many other schools and will feel secure your student's learning in a safe and well-organized setting. The extra help and consideration toward my individual student, along with the excellent teaching staff, is well worth every dollar it costs to send my child to this school." – Tricia Dusheke
- "I believe CLHS supports my child in ways the public schools or larger Christian schools cannot. Lauren is treated as a special person, with a lot of respect and caring. The school is not only concerned with her academics, which are pretty much straight A's, but is equally concerned about her spiritual walk. She is encouraged to be the very best she can be by having good discipline, a loving Christian atmosphere, and strong academics within the classroom. Lauren has developed a friendship with each of the students at Calvary. These students frequently get together outside of school, and I am pleased that my daughter has a core support group of Christian friends." – Susan Holland-Hinrichs
- "This was the best decision we could have made for our son. He is doing well academically as well as maturing in his Christian faith. We are so pleased with the quality of his high school education." – Charles & Christine Hollingsworth
- "CLHS is a caring Christian-based atmosphere that will certainly influence my son after he graduates to lead a good and wholesome Christian life." – Doris Propst
- "Teachers here model faith and a positive Christian attitude. They respect the kids and treat them right." – Larry Stegeman
Student’s Feelings about Calvary
- What do the students feel about Calvary?
- "Calvary is a place of good Christian principles. We as students have a close knit relationship. It is enjoyable. I love the atmosphere and enjoy coming every day." – Macy
- "I love the small group so you know everyone. I am allowed to express feelings in a safe, loving environment, without reprimand or punishment. (ex. Hugging Mrs. Crider!!!) We receive individualized attention like assistance with algebra. We have really cool teachers!!! Student input and opinions are valued." – Josiah
- "Calvary is a nice place. It is fun and educational at the same time. The teachers are usually nice, most of the classes are fun, and the students are fun and energetic." – Drew
- "I am so happy I came to Calvary Lutheran High School. We have small, personalized classes, so the teachers are really right there for me when I need help. I know that I am safe here. I am continuing to grow in my knowledge and faith in God every day. I know that He will bless this school. Our class may be small, but we are very close knit. My friends are probably the greatest blessing that I have obtained from attending this school. I love my friends so much, and I am so incredibly thankful to God for each and every one of them." – Lauren
- "I like this school because I am free to be a Christian, and we pray in class. All of the people here are really nice. They push me hard academically, but I know that is best for me. I am excited to be the first graduating class from Calvary Lutheran High School." – Ben
- "The teachers at Calvary are pretty nice, and you get to know everyone in school. It's fun to hang out with other Christian people that have the same views as you. There are some bonuses to being in a small school. Just recently, we got to go to Pizza Hut. You also can get one-on-one attention. We each have our own computers which is cool." – Robbie
- "Calvary Lutheran High School is a fun place to be. We the students are really close, and we like to hang together. We have our own computer. I am glad to be a Calvary Lutheran Lion. GO LIONS!! ROAR!" – Jared
