JAN 27th Basketball Games Raise Breast Cancer Awareness:
The Calvary Lions and the Tuscumbia Lions fought together for a good cause! Calvary Lutheran High School raised $2,300 for cancer research on our “Pink Out” night. This amount was raised from the selling of tshirts and bracelets, the gate and concessions profits, and free will donations. This event had a huge turnout and we want to thank everyone who came out to support this cause!

2nd ANNUAL BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT:
Calvary Lutheran High School hosted their 2nd annual boys and girls basketball tournament on January 6 and 7. The opening games were held at 4:30 at Trinity Lutheran and Helias’ gyms on Friday, January 6, and play continued on Saturday.
The boys’ team started off the tournament with a strong game. Calvary’s boys’ team beat Belle’s junior varsity team 42 to 18. Unfortunately, they dropped the next game in a three overtime thriller to Metro-East Lutheran (Edwardsville, Il) 57 to 58. Junior Emily Jackson, who was the student in the Luther the Lion mascot, noted that it was thrilling to watch this amazing display of talent. In the third place game, Calvary won 38-25 to Kansas City Lutheran.
The girls’ team had a different storyline. Calvary’s girls’ team lost their first two games 46-51 and 26-47 to Belle and Tolton Catholic (A) respectfully. Then the girls beat Tolton Catholic (B) in the seventh place game 35-15.
In the boys’ championship game, Metro-East Lutheran won against St. Paul Concordia 55-37. For the girls’ championship, Metro-East Lutheran beat the Fulton School at St. Alban’s 52-34.
Calvary Lutheran High School is grateful to all of the many businesses who sponsored the tournament and to all of the many volunteers who worked at the tournament. This commitment contributed greatly to a successful tournament. ~James Bernskoetter
BASKETBALL GAMES On December 29th:
On December 29, the girls’ basketball team will be throwing out prizes after their game with Chamois and before the varsity boys’ game. These prizes and announcements are designed to remind everyone how important it is to buckle up and make good choices, especially during the Christmas season. SADD president, Kara Wehmeyer, thought that this encouragement should not only go to the students of Calvary but also to the community as well. Make a positive choice! Come support your Calvary Lions, and see if you can catch a prize! The action begins at 6 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran as the Lady Lions take on the Chamois Pirates on December 29th. ~Kara Wehmeyer

BOYS BASKETBALL:
Tuesday, December 6, 2011, Calvary took on Tuscumbia in the Jamestown tournament. Although Calvary was unable to win, dropping the game 40-50, it was a great improvement from the last time Calvary played Tuscumbia. Last year when Calvary played Tuscumbia, they lost by 30+ points. Tuscumbia, having not lost one player from the previous season, Calvary considered losing by 10 an improvement from the 30 point loss. The game was close until the 3rd quarter when Tuscumbia made a run. Despite the loss, Calvary looks to build off this game and come out stronger next time they meet Tuscumbia. ~Caleb Propst
Monday, December 5, 2011, The Calvary Lutheran Lions played Jamestown for their first game of the Jamestown tournament. The Lions struggled to get their offense to click all game long. The Lions played a solid 1-3-1 defense and pressed for most of the game. They depended on their defense and rebounding to keep them in the game. Kyle Maddox led the Lions with twenty points. The Lions ended up winning thanks to the Lions hitting free throws down the stretch. The Lions played sloppy, but they fought and came out with win. Their next game of the tournament will be against the Tuscumbia Lions. ~Trevor Dusheke

Friday, December 3, 2011, The Calvary Lutheran Lions took on the Columbia Independent School for their homecoming game. Calvary handled C.I.S. with no problem, beating them 62-19. Calvary was led by its stifling defense and leading scorer James Bernskoetter with 17 points. Calvary’s defense held C.I.S. to three points in the first quarter and did not let them get a shot off until the score was 16-0. The game was a nice way to celebrate homecoming.

Monday, November 28, 2011, The Calvary Lutheran Lions opened their season at New Bloomfield with a game against the Wildcats. Calvary’s starting lineup was made of 3 seniors, James Bernskoetter, Craig Wehmeyer, and Kyle Maddox, and 2 sophomores, Trevor Dusheke and Caleb Propst. The Lions came out ready to start their season and improve from last year’s 8-8 record. They played tough defense but struggled to get their offense going. They went into the half down by 15 at the half. They did not let this deficit slow them down. In the second half, they started to get their offense going. Trevor Dusheke had 11 straight points to start the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Lions were down by 10 when Beau Monson hit two straight 3’s to put them within four. With less than 2 minutes left in the game, James Bernskoetter hit a 3 to make it a 1 point game. The Lions were down by one with 3.9 seconds and had a chance to win it. They ended up losing the game 49-48; however, they took a lot away from the game. They are looking forward to their next game which is their first home game and homecoming game.

GIRLS BASKETBALL:
On December 3, 2011, the Lady Lions faced off against the Columbia Independent Lady Lions for the girl’s first varsity homecoming. The Calvary girls played hard the whole game and came out with a win. The team is learning from their experiences to better themselves.
~Kara Wehmeyer

GIRLS SOFTBALL:
Calvary Lutheran had the privilege of cooperating with Father Tolton in Columbia for softball this year. There were nine girls, four from Calvary who came together to make a team. The girls were taught to give 100% effort 100% of the time, thanks to Coach Mary Beth Anthony. Some of the girls had never played before, but the team pulled together to work through the differences to end the season with a 1-3-1 record.

FOOTBALL:
This was Calvary’s first opportunity to participate in football. This would not have been possible at all without the cooperation with Father Tolton Catholic High School. When we were at practice, it was time to go to work. We did our best and worked our hardest. We gave every ounce of heart, sweat, and blood we had. We will work hard to improve and become the best we can. ~Emmett Spradlin

VOLLEYBALL:
Calvary Lutheran High School’s volleyball program is about helping the girls improve their volleyball skills while experiencing playing volleyball on a higher level and having fun doing it. They are committed to giving 100% in every game and practice. They are to have good attitudes on and off the court as well. School always comes before sports. Students who play sports are dedicated and have to be responsible to play a sport and also achieve academically in school. All the girls from the team plan on returning next year. Learning from their experiences in the past, they hope to continue to do better in each game. ~Krista Stanford
