Spirit Day & Homecoming (student writings)

Posted on December 1, 2011 @ 7:54 am - Filed under: CLHS Booster Association

Calvary Lutheran High School has just celebrated its annual Spirit Week. Throughout this week, students were encouraged to take pride in their school and to enjoy themselves. Students participated in games and other fun activities. Calvary also held their homecoming basketball games, both boys and girls, on Friday. John Meyer, a freshman at Calvary Lutheran, said “I enjoyed spirit week. I think it was really fun because we got to dress in school spirit. It was also really exciting because we got to do cool activities at the end of school.” Looking back, the students really enjoyed spirit week, as well as the Calvary homecoming and homecoming game. Spirit Week drove them to show more school spirit, and to be more involved in school activities. It was a very enjoyable experience, and the school looks forward to doing the same next year.

Monday, November 28th was a very “forgetful” day for those at Calvary Lutheran High School. That day was Senior Citizen Day. Everyone got to dress up like an old person. The list of props used on that day included wigs, walkers, bifocals, and suspenders. At the end of the day, everyone got the chance to participate in a game of shuffleboard with tuna cans, or students could play Scrabble, card games or Bingo. There were also snacks distributed of applesauce and pudding with coffee and hot chocolate. Everyone had a lot of fun forgetting where they put their dentures that day.
~Jodi Means

Tuesday, November 29, was Nerds Day for homecoming week. Most of the student body participated in this fun activity. The costumes were very creative. Most of the students wore suspenders, glasses, ties or bow ties, and high socks with sandals and had pens and calculators in their pockets. Each day students get a chance to get points by dressing up. At the end of the week, whichever student has the most points wins a prize. We had an hour activity at the end of the day which consisted of many nerdy games. Some of the games were a spelling bee, Cranium, Apples to Apples, and Scrabble. Sophomore Erin Anderson and freshman John Meyer were the two finalists in the spelling bee. Erin Anderson won the spelling bee.

Wednesday was Twin Day at Calvary and had a huge turnout. Whether it was matching pink hard hats, corresponding ties, or duplicate pairs of zebra socks, there were twins sporting outrageous fashion everywhere. Some teachers even participated in finding their long lost twin by dressing up to match a student. The day came to a close with milk, chocolate chip cookies, a three-legged race, egg toss, and egg bopping.
~Lydia Browning

Thursday of Spirit Week at Calvary was Career Day. Students were allowed to dress up as someone in the field of the career they chose. Classes were shortened on Thursday, so students could sit in and listen to people from a multitude of professions talk about their respective jobs. Career Day was a very fun day that was also educational.
~Caleb Propst

Friday of Spirit Week the students were allowed to show their school spirit by dressing up in Calvary apparel and jeans. This is supporting the basketball teams that play tonight for homecoming. Students also participated in a fun game of capture the flag. Spirit Week is a fun time to show off your school spirit, while also getting ready for homecoming.

Homecoming Dance:
On December 10th, Calvary Lutheran High School had their annual homecoming. Many students arrived at the school building to have fun and dance with their friends and dates. The DJ was Kerwin Kollmeier, who also managed the lights and music. Everyone enjoyed the music, the fog, and the lights. Decorations were throughout the school in the festivity of Christmas. Many staff and faculty were at the homecoming dance as well. Beverages and snacks were also provided. Homecoming was a good way to end the first semester, and many anticipate the next dance the school will be having. ~John Meyer

Calvary Christmas Parade Float

Calvary Float

Calvary Lutheran High School entered their eighth annual Christmas parade float in the Jefferson City Christmas parade, and, according to some, it was the best one yet. Junior Cole Oxley and his father, Landon Oxley, the primary coordinators, spent long hours working on the float as did many students from Calvary.

Construction started in the middle of October and continued during the weeks and the weekends prior to the parade. This year’s theme of the parade, Christmas in Paradise, easily lent itself to a Christian theme that could be reflected by the school. Most of the floats focused on a tropical theme while Calvary focused on a church setting with baby Jesus. In a Christian’s eyes, this is Christmas in paradise.

Calvary won first place in the non-commercial category in the Jefferson City parade. They participated in the Holts Summit Christmas parade and also won first place and received a check for $75 dollars. Calvary is blessed to be able to spread the message of Christmas in Paradise. This float would not have been possible without the help of Calvary’s many supporters! ~Dakota Benton
