Grandparents Visit Day – March 7th

Posted on @ 4:44 pm - Filed under: Calvary News

Calvary is having an event soon that could possibly be one of the most anticipated events of the school year. Grandparents’ Day is coming to Calvary on Wednesday, March 7th. This one day is very anticipated by many students and grandparents alike. The grandparents like to come in and see what their grandchild or great grandchild’s daily school life is like. The students like it because they get to see their grandparents and meet their friends’ grandparents.

This year, Grandparents’ Day will start at 10:30 and will end at 12:03 with the end of lunch. On this very special day, the grandparents are invited to attend chapel services. Afterward, students and grandparents may enjoy refreshments.

Grandparents are happy to come to Calvary and have a look around. Brenda Rathmann, grandmother to sophomore Jodie Means and aunt to junior Cole Oxley, enjoyed coming to Calvary last year. Highly impressed with last year’s event, she found coming to school with her grandson to be very interesting. The highlight of her experience was enjoying the worship service together and seeing the students interact with one another.

Both students and grandparents are looking forward to this event. The best part is the chance to bond and become closer to each other. Both groups will be able to take some treasured memories away with them. ~Jodie Means

Lions Against Cancer

Posted on @ 1:32 pm - Filed under: Calvary News,Uncategorized

The Calvary Lutheran Lions hosted the Tuscumbia Lions on January 27, 2012, in their first annual Lions Against Cancer game. The game was specifically focused on Breast Cancer Awareness because the students and faculty at Calvary have been closely affected by the cancer. Calvary organized the basketball game to raise money for cancer awareness as they have played in other schools’ cancer awareness games and wanted to start a tradition of their own.

The event was a huge success. Although Calvary came up short of the victory on the court, everyone was a winner as greater than $2,300 was raised. Senior Kyle Maddox, student chairman of the event, stated that he was amazed by the large number of supporters and level of commitment from the community. He is anxiously looking forward to what his underclassmen committee members will do to build on this success for next year’s event.

However, there is still opportunity for more money to be raised as t-shirts and bracelets are still for sale. Please call Calvary at 573-638-0228 for more information or to support this endeavor. Sizes and quantities of shirts are limited. All the money that has been raised and all the money still being raised will go to cancer awareness.

The week leading up to the game was Breast Cancer Awareness week at Calvary. The students wore pink ribbons all week. On Wednesday, Lance MacLaughlin, whose wife is battling the cancer, talked about their battles and hardships dealing with the cancer and how they look to God knowing He has a plan for them no matter what happens.

When all was said and done, the game was a great accomplishment as a large amount of money was raised which will benefit cancer awareness. Calvary would like to thank all the supporters of the game, Tuscumbia for participating, and all the businesses that made generous donations for the t-shirts. We hope to see you at the game next year and be one step closer to a cure for cancer!

Calvary Choir Spring Performance – May 8th

Posted on @ 12:05 pm - Filed under: Calvary News

Calvary Choir Singing Praises

The choir at Calvary is preparing for their spring performance.  On May 8th, at Trinity Lutheran Elementary School at 7 P. M., Calvary Lutheran High School will be hosting their annual spring concert.  This event will be free to the community, but free-will offerings will be accepted at the door.  Any donations will be given to the music department at Calvary Lutheran High School.

The performances to be expected are from the Calvary choir and the select choir.  This will include four solos and one duet.  The Director of Music at Trinity Church, Pastor Kenneth Funke, will be accompanying the choir on the piano.  The songs featured will be Christian songs which have been sung in chapel services of various Lutheran schools.  Freshmen Kenna Tervo and Mary Elliott will be singing Lead Me to the Cross.  Tervo and Elliott chose this particular piece for its powerful message.  In addition, secular pieces, such as Route 66 and Footloose, will also be performed with choreography.  The choir has been practicing all these songs and dances for over two months.  Director Melisa Ahlers said that the students are very excited to show off all of their hard work they have put into preparing for this concert.  Freshman Margaret Oberkrom, member of the select choir, feels that the choreography will be fun for the students as well as the audience members.

Refreshments of cookies and punch will be served after the concert by the Calvary Boosters.

This will be a fantastic event for the community, and all are encouraged to come join in the celebration.  ~Aaron Wilde

Junior High Dance

Posted on @ 8:24 am - Filed under: Calvary News

6th – 8th grade students are invited to attend a junior high dance held here at Calvary Friday night (Jan. 13th) from 7-10pm. This is a fun, safe, social event for the junior high students and provides us an opportunity to get students to come into our building. If you know any other good Christian youth who would enjoy the dance, please help them to have this information and extend our warm invitation. The cost of the dance is $5 and snacks & drinks are available for purchase. The money raised from this event is dedicated for use at our annual beginning of the year retreat. I am looking for 5 more adult chaperones. If you are willing to help chaperone this event, please call Mr. Ahlers at the school.

Calvary’s Gift: A Unique Blessing

Posted on November 30, 2011 @ 12:29 pm - Filed under: Calvary News,Uncategorized

Calvary Lutheran High School has been blessed immensely with Calvary’s Gift. Calvary’s Gift is a local resale shop run by Calvary Lutheran High School. This undertaking is a fundraiser to help with students’ financial assistance.

The Gift opened in November of 2009 and has given back to the school the equivalent of twenty student tuitions which totals over $100,000.

The Gift’s success has been due to God’s grace and the work of many dedicated volunteers. Approximately forty volunteers, including two Calvary students, keep the Gift running smoothly. The two students go to the Gift as part of their service/leadership class to help the store by doing whatever the volunteers need. This includes carrying clothes to the upper floors, carrying in things from the storage garage, or helping people who are donating items unload their vehicles.

The store sells everything from clothes to decorative pieces. On the first floor, there are children’s clothes, decorative items, books, pictures, and, occasionally, some furniture. There are also five rooms upstairs. You will find a kitchen/household wares room, toy room, clothing room, linen room, and a miscellaneous room called Man’s Land. The store also has seasonal items such as Christmas lights and various holiday decorations.

The items the store sells are from generous donors. Donations are accepted during operating hours Wednesday through Saturday from 9-3. When making a donation, stop by the checkout counter first where someone will direct and assist you. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Calvary’s Gift during operating hours at (573) 659-8176.

The store is located in the Central United Church of Christ’s parsonage at 713 Washington Street, just south of downtown Jefferson City. The church has been extremely gracious to the school by making the parsonage available.

Calvary’s Gift has been a true blessing to Calvary Lutheran High School, and with continued support from the community, it will be around for years to come. ~ Dakota Benton

Calvary Summer Meetings

Posted on June 27, 2011 @ 10:29 am - Filed under: Calvary News

Each summer Calvary hosts evening meetings in order to communicate with families about important events and valuable information. In this way, we can share necessary forms and policy changes as well as give important information about activities and events happening into the beginning of August. It is our goal that every family be able to attend one of these events, but we recognize the difficulty of family schedules. So, I am including the .pdf files of all of the documents that are being handed out at the meetings. God’s blessings to you and your family.

In Christ,
Erich Ahlers
