Calvary's 2008-09 school year was amazingly successful. Right from the first moment of practice students were exceeding expectations by having fourteen young men arrive at the first day of practice! We were blessed by God with our first two wins in Calvary history with the added bonus of a large margin between scores!

Practices this year were both long and hard. This is common for any team's practices. Kids pulled through, though, by encouraging each other and commenting on such a good job someone did. Coach Knipp did a great job on focusing on our fundamentals and enhancing our basic skills. Though the practices were tough, they were also very fun. Coach was always thinking up a new game for us to play that was hilariously funny, but also enhanced our fundamental skills. Coach constantly worked on our offence and defense and made sure our endurance was up. Even though we had a large team, which means many substitutes, Coach wanted us all to be in top physical condition. It was always funny to listen to Coach yell "Suicide!" (which is a running exercise that is extremely hard and tiring) and hear someone on the team ask softly, "How many?". Now that I think about it, it really wasn't that funny.

Another thing we did to make sure we were in condition, while also working on free throw percentage, was a little thing we liked to call Brotherly Love. One person would go to the free throw line while everyone else is on the baseline and would shoot two free throws. If the person missed his first one, he would put the ball down and we would run something of coaches choice (i.e. Suicide, Homicide which is worse than a suicide, Backpedal Homicide which is horribly much more worse than a Homicide, and many, many other things). When we finished running the person would pick the ball back up and shoot his second free throw. If he missed, we would repeat the running process again. If he missed one, we ran once. If he missed two, we ran twice. When the person has shot his two, we would move on to the next person in line, and this would continue until everyone on the team has shot twice. Needless to say, we were whipped into shape extremely quickly.

Coach would always harp on our fundamental skills, and for good reason. It's hard to do well in basketball without knowing your basic skills. We would always do exercises that focused on dribbling, shooting, and passing. We also did many exercises that had to do with offence and defense and our skills here were increased, also. We would always run, and Coach encouraged us to push ourselves to the best of our abilities.

Now it's game time. You've been practicing for a long time. You are tired, and maybe a little sore. Games were the best part of the 08-09 season. Calvary team members had a great time playing competitively, but also playing for God. Coach put many hours into making sure we were ready for all our games at practice, and usually we would dissect a game we just played afterword to see what we could have done better. We had tons of fun playing the games and we also learned a lot about ourselves and each other through these games.

Another plus about last season was that it brought us all closer together as friends and, more importantly, brought us closer to God. We would always pray after practices and you would see a lot of players praying to themselves before games. These last accomplishments were the best parts of the season. No matter how many games we won or lost.
